In the absence of the instituted acolyte, at the service of the altar and to help the priest, lay ministers can be appointed to carry the cross, the candles, the censer, the bread and the wine, and the water.

The functions that the acolyte can perform are of various kinds and many of them can be simultaneous. Therefore, it is convenient to distribute them among several. When a single acolyte is available, he will perform the most important functions, and the others will be distributed among the ministers.

Since the performance of the Altar Server is an integral part of the celebration of the Mass, at least one Altar Server must help the priest. On Sundays and other important occasions, two or more servers can be used to carry out the various functions normally entrusted to these ministers.

REQUIREMENTS

The Servants of the Altar must be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and carry them out well and with proper reverence. They must have already received Holy Communion for the first time, and normally receive the Eucharist every time they participate in the liturgy.

TRAINING

Altar Servers should receive appropriate training before they begin their ministry. The formation should include instruction on the Mass, its parts and their meanings, the various objects used in the liturgy (their names and usage), and the various functions of the Altar Server during the Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Altar Servers should also receive appropriate guidance on how to maintain proper decorum and clothing for when they serve at Mass and other functions.

DRESS CODE

Altar Servers may use a dawn or other appropriate or decorous clothing. All the Servants of the Altar must wear the same liturgical dress.

FUNCTION IN THE LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS

There should be no distinction between the functions carried out on the altar by men and boys, those carried out by women or children. The correct term is "altar servers" and should be used for those who perform the functions of the instituted acolyte.

The Servants of the Altar carry the cross, the candle of the procession, they hold the book for the celebrant priest when he is not on the altar, they carry the incense and the censer, they present the priest bread, wine, and water during the preparation of the gifts or help him when he receives the offerings from the people, empty the water for the priest to wash his hands, help the priest celebrant and diocese as much as necessary.

The Servants of the Altar participate in the Mass. They respond to the prayers and dialogues of the priest along with the congregation. They also join in singing hymns and other songs of the liturgy.

The Servants of the Altar must sit in a place from which they can easily assist the priest celebrant and the deacon. The place next to the priest is normally reserved for the deacon.

The Servants of the Altar cannot distribute Holy Communion, unless the bishop has authorized them to perform this function.
